These three adorable chicks are the newest addition to our homestead.
My daughters have named them Cutie, Ming Ming (thanks to The Backyardigans) and Sweetie.
We’re slightly disappointed that only 3 of our 8 eggs hatched, but such is the experiment of incubating eggs. We are thankful for these three, however, and now wait in suspense to discover if these chicks are hens or roosters. I already have some guesses, do you?
Our white Silkie hen is currently broody and sitting on some eggs in the hen-house. It would be a joy to have our first batch of hens raised with the flock naturally this year! We are just hoping that the 8 inches of snow we got on Monday doesn’t hinder this mission.
For the next few weeks we’re enjoying these three cuties. They will live in their brooder in the garage for the next 6 weeks or so until the weather is steadily warm. When that occurs, it will be moving day into the chicken yard in their own fenced-in pen. The old biddies who currently reside out in the chicken yard need some time to get used to these birds before they all start living together.
In the meantime, life is really truly good. We are thankful for new life and new additions for our farm. Self-sufficiency on our suburban lot is becoming more of a reality each year. The seeds for our garden are ready to go…so let’s go spring!!
