Green Grass and Dirty Hands

A few 50 degree days in a row is a sure sign that spring is here! Maybe not officially according to the calendar, but I’d say that the flowers and trees hold the real answer. Small green buds are emerging after a cold, snowy slumber. Forgotten bulbs are popping up with the first flowers of the season.

Some of my most favorite days of life happen in the spring. Life feels so fresh and new, full of hope. Windows opened let the stale air of winter out  and usher in the freshness of spring. Muddy shoes scatter across the back porch, bringing a little more cleanup but a lot more fun.

New life is also beginning here are our house. Eight eggs in shades of blue and brown are warm and toasty in a small incubator and are being hand turned three times every day. We are learning about the parts of a chicken and how the egg is formed for science. The parts of an egg are fascinating to the girls and they just cannot imagine HOW a baby chick can be inside that thin shell. That wonder is contagious and has me anticipating the hatching day as much as them!

The eggs are about just over 2/3 of the way into their 21 day incubation period. Hopefully, steady temperature and humidity will yield us 8 baby chicks this Tuesday!  We are welcoming the new addition to the homestead and hoping for more hens than roosters. After all, Boss Man already takes pretty good care of his ladies, and we’ve learned from experience that more than one rooster just doesn’t work for us.

So here’s to the beginning of Spring and the new life is brings. Here’s to green grass that needs lots of mowing and tiny dirty hands that need lots of washing.

What’s going on at your home this Spring?
